Visually identical materials that only differ in terms of special properties, for instance a different air and water content or contamination with substances such as asbestos, represent a particular challenge when sorting.
Embedded imaging systems with hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology are ideal for this task: They provide spectral data for every pixel instead of a monochrome or color value. Complex information can be derived from this – from over 100 different colors, through the material properties and chemical composition, all the way up to the thickness. This makes it possible to differentiate between materials that look identical with 100% accuracy,
offering enormous potential for systems used in automatic waste separation in recycling plants, for example. Possible applications include sorting packaging by plastic types, or the safe and reliable analysis of building debris for hazardous contamination.
The high-resolution HSI sensors from Photonfocus stand out thanks to their fast recording and transfer speeds, robust quality and compact design. Moreover, because they are capable of processing and interpreting data onboard, the modular systems can be integrated into stationary plants, mobile applications or used as standalone solutions.
